It’s the Media, Stupid !

Some news organisations try really hard to bring you crack-up-to-date, snazzy, intriguing, hot-off-the-press narrative on the unfolding chaos of Climate Change.

Other news organisations think that writing about “Climategate”, as if it were a genuine challenge to Climate Change Science, is a serious piece of journalism.

But they’re wrong; so, so wrong.

The real story is Climate Change. It’s here, and it’s happening now. And it’s frightening.

Global Warming : Choose Your Baseline

Just recently you may have overheard conversations like “the Earth has heated up by around 0.7 or 0.75 or 0.8 degrees Celsius since the start of the Industrial Revolution”. “No it hasn’t, it’s only warmed by 0.2 or 0.4 degrees Celsius !”

So who’s right ? And how can you tell ? It all depends on where you choose your baseline, the year you count from. And it also depends on the reach or spread of the data in the data set you are looking at.

If you believe that the 1800s were colder than normal, then you will think that the Earth has not warmed up so much, because you will discount everything before about 1940 because it was, to you colder than “average”.

Some of the data available on global temperatures “interpolates” for areas where measurements may be missing in certain geographical regions of the world. This can give the appearance that the data sets are different, when actually, they’re not.

Clive James : Inadequate Commentator

Clive James has openly admitted that he knows nothing about Climate Change :-

https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8322513.stm
“In praise of scepticism”, 23 October 2009

and yet he still continues to pass judgement on the way the Science is conducted, and accepts the validity of the arguments of the Climate Change deniers :-

“Climate change – a story too often told the same way”, 11 December 2009

I ask you this : since he knows nothing about Climate Change Science, how can he possibly justify accepting the views of the Climate Change deniers ?

David Whitehouse Risks Inaccuracy

Dr David Whitehouse has had his personal views on Climate Change Science aired in the Daily Mail this week; yet the newspaper did not seek to offer an article responding to his position, which is somewhat at odds with the general conclusions of mainstream science :-

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1235126/What-told-Global-Warming–missing-facts.html

So, in the absence of the Daily Mail permitting a questioning or critiquing of David Whitehouse’s personal views, I shall here attempt to unpack how close he comes to inaccuracy.

Climategate : Myles Allen is Confused

Dr Myles Allen, head of the Climate Dynamics group at the University of Oxford’s Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Department is confused. “It is odd that we still don’t take climate change seriously”, he writes in The Guardian online, discussing the fact that a good proportion of the British public don’t believe in Global Warming :-

https://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/dec/11/science-climate-change-phil-jones

He might need to wake up to the fact that the British Press are being misled, and in turn, misleading the country.

The Only Way Is Up

It doesn’t matter which way up Michel Jarraud (Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization) holds the temperature chart. The only way the trend can be understood is upwards. The temperatures are going up.

That’s Global Warming, folks !

Looking at the temperature data from any of the major data sets around the world, it doesn’t take a second to accept that the Earth is warming :-

While The Mice Are Away…

While all the Climate Change activists are away in Copenhagen…

The story must have run something like this : several months ago, as it became clear that a large part of the social-developmental-environmental movements were going to be in Denmark in December, some big UK civil servants in Whitehall, London went down the pub with some representatives from the aviation industry and out the suggestion popped : “I know, let’s approve the Heathrow Third Runway at the start of the Copenhagen Summit. Nobody will be around to occupy anything or protest.”

Untidy Minds #11 : Bjorn Lomborg

In the Munk Debates 2009 on Climate Change, Bjorn Lomborg made a claim that I immediately found contestable, a claim that probably seemed to be convincing to the audience and yet was without foundation.

He claimed that there would be more people suffering water stress in the world without Climate Change, than there would be if Climate Change were allowed to continue.

Endangermouse

Will he, or won’t he ?

Will Barack Hussein Obama formalise, finalise, documentise the “endangerment finding” in an EPA declaration, that Greenhouse Gases endanger public health under The Clean Air Act ?

https://www.latimes.com/news/nation-and-world/la-fg-obama-environment8-2009dec08,0,3159719.story

If he does, he should be awarded the epithet “Endangermouse”, the more-than-mouse hero, for subverting the slow and ineffective grinding of the United States Senate and Congress.

Without waiting for them to chew and chomp and perhaps spit out the Climate laws currently before them for their consideration, Obama could impose change through the Environmental Protection Agency; the back door, but the fast door.

We’re going to get sense and speed on Global Warming legislation. It could be faster than you think.

Untidy Minds #10 : James Inhofe

It’s a shame that the Financial Times saw fit to publish an article with the headline “US senator calls global warming a ‘hoax’”, considering the intense debate going on regarding the science of Climate Change.

On the other hand, it does show up the untidy mind of James Inhofe quite spectacularly, so maybe it is useful :-

Untidy Minds #9 : Richard Lindzen (again)

Richard Lindzen makes an ungracious return to this collection of untidy minds, appearing courtesy of The Times, which is rather disappointing. If any editors of any newspaper know the detrimental value of lying propaganda, it should be those at the top at The Times, which is normally the channel for Government-sourced snapshots and snippets, sometimes deliberate leaks.

The number of outright mistruths and sneaky fiddlings in Richard Lindzen’s statement is astounding.

Untidy Minds #7 : Ian Plimer

Who do you trust ? Professor Ian Plimer or 100 years of science ? I know what my money’s on, and it isn’t the Australian geologist with mining interests.

That doesn’t stop British journalists going with Professor Plimer. They are sorely in need of some decent education, in my view. Unless they’re going with a sensational story to get revenue. In which case they still need a decent education in the history of Climate Change scepticism and denial, so they know how divisive it is amongst the population. Publishing Climate Change denial makes the Media seem irresponsible, from my viewpoint.

I want to touch on just a snippet from a recent Daily Express article in order to demonstrate my resistance to Ian Plimer :-

“Chaotic world of climate truth” Viewpoint by Mike Hulme, 4 November 2006

The author of the book “Why We Disagree About Climate Change” has been bravely trying to reframe Climate Change, not as a problem of science, but a problem of society. To some extent, I regard his work as useful. On the other hand, I find some of his work a mind trap.

Untidy Minds #4 : David Davis

Congratulations go to David Davis, who appears to have singlehandedly found the way to split the British Conservative Party for good, by coming out as a Climate Change sceptic, and thereby effectively challenging David Cameron for the leadership (which Davis will lose, like he did the last time, I reckon) :-

https://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/david-davis-why-this-ferocious-desire-to-impose-hairshirt-policies-1832213.html

He writes :-

“The row about whether global warming exists gets even more virulent. The case is not helped by the fact that the planet appears to have been cooling, not warming, in the last decade. Last week, the row was fuelled after a hacker revealed emails between the world’s leading climate scientists that seemed to show them conspiring to rig the figures to support their theories. So it is unsurprising that more than half the public no longer believe in global warming.”
