Gore Was Mostly Right

Al Gore speak at the December 2009 Climate Talks in Copenhagen this week, and you would not believe how he got mauled by the Media and the Denier-Sceptics. Watch and listen to the links below and consider if you can detect the part that stuck in the throat of those who resist putting a halt to Global Warming.

Part 1 : “We must not allow Copenhagen to become Doha” :-

Part 2 : Icecaps in “runaway melt mode” : possibility of summer ice-free Arctic Ocean by 2013 :-

Part 6 : Conclusion and appeal :-

Yes, you guessed it : from Part 2 : the projection of an ice-free Arctic Ocean for at least part of Summer, possibly as early as 2013, is by far the stickiest of sticking-in-the-throat claims for the Climate Change Denier-Sceptics.

Why, if that were true, then we have to act. And soon !

So the Denier-Sceptics got on to the case to try to bring this claim down :-

“Copenhagen climate summit: Al Gore condemned over Arctic ice melting prediction Al Gore, the former US Vice-President, has become embroiled in a climate change spin row after claiming that the Arctic could be completely ice-free within five years.” By Murray Wardrop

“TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2009 : Gore lies again : Gore, speaking at the Copenhagen climate change summit, stated the latest research showed that the Arctic could be completely ice-free in five years.”

Except, Al Gore wasn’t lying :-

“Yes, Maslowski predicted just two years ago that the Arctic could be ice-free by 2013 — see graph of projected ice volume : December 15, 2009”

And even the Climate Change Denier-Sceptics have been forced to recant :-

But what did Dr Maslowski actually say ? :-

“Wednesday, 12 December 2007 : Arctic summers ice-free ‘by 2013’ : By Jonathan Amos : Science reporter, BBC News, San Francisco : Scientists in the US have presented one of the most dramatic forecasts yet for the disappearance of Arctic sea ice. Their latest modelling studies indicate northern polar waters could be ice-free in summers within just 5-6 years. Professor Wieslaw Maslowski told an American Geophysical Union meeting that previous projections had underestimated the processes now driving ice loss.”

So why has Al Gore gone for a firefighting damage limitation excercise ? :-

“From The Times : December 17, 2009 : Al Gore tries to cool ‘climate spin’ by correcting claims of North pole thaw”

Probably to make sure the story gets out there correctly, rather let the lie reverberate around the globe :-

“Clarification: Gore misspoke on polar ice data : 16 December 2009 : COPENHAGEN — In an early version of a Dec. 14 story, Al Gore told the U.N. climate conference that new data suggested the Arctic polar ice cap may disappear in the summertime within five to seven years. Gore’s office later clarified his statement and said he meant the cap would be nearly ice-free.”

Al Gore was mostly right, then. There is a very high risk of serious damage to the Arctic sea ice in a very few short years. This is the main story we should pay attention to, not linguistic semantics.

The Arctic is melting, folks, and we did it, and it’s time to stop :-
