I’m getting reports of people with an outline plan to take a skinny dip in the fountains in Trafalgar Square.

Apparently, to raise the profile of Carbon Trading, they’re going to paint themselves with some kind of black paint, or black marker pen, and splash about shouting something like “Carbon Trading doesn’t wash !”

Also, in a separate development, people are reported to be hiding their tents in professional-looking wheelie suitcases so they can get through the major train stations without attracting unwanted Police attention.

I believe fold-up suit bags have been considered as well, just as if people are travelling in casual clothes but need to change into a suit later.

Great camoflage, people !

LONDON 22:30 – The Man on the Clapham Omnibus reacted strongly to a chickpea curry he ate at lunchtime today. At hand to assist with his sufferings was a comfortably recognisable news sheet.

But all was not as it seemed. This publication was no ordinary newspaper, oh no. This was from a print run far, far away, way into the future, in fact. From 2020, in fact.

It had somehow wormed its way down a wormhole of negatively running time, and landed with a crinkled crumple on the fast-food-remains-encrusted floor of the upper deck of the 77 Bus.

With hindsight, of course, The Man would not have eaten that particular spiced meal, and this World would have set a Carbon Cap in stone, saving the icecaps, and saving us from the fire of Global Warming.

And that newspaper could have fluttered into the consciousness of The Man, and he could have taken A Stand against Climate Change. He could have become Not Stupid.

If you want to help us distribute a copy of that same publication to the impoverished minds of the London nouveau-poor in their financial and environmental precarity, then do contact us on 07779 792 675 to get on the list, or e-mail reclaimthesheets@gmail.com to Sign Up for duty.

You get to wake up at Stupid O’Clock on the morning of Friday 27th March 2009, work for a few hours giving away the future of news, and then relax with a FREE BEER.

Calling all dudes. Calling all honeys. Come and hand out London’s brightest and brashest free newspaper, and give the paid ones a seeing to in the process.

Dudes, remember the glory days of old, handing out trillions of arch and angry political leafletry stamped with cardinal colour logos and smeared with carbon black ?

Bring back those golden, sunny hours of innocent street flirting and lung-gurgling puffs of the harshest baccy, calling out around the world, are you ready for a brand new ideological heartbeat ?

Come with us, down to the City of London, and push out the folded, crisply inked, light propaganda, to denizens and citizens and homeless street sleepers, sweepers and crawly-creepers.

Down to the smoking Wall and industrial Wapping and the Street that is Fleet, shadows blown away, coffee coursing through the Statin-controlled veins.

And be a part of the New Day, the Great Chortle of the Dawn of Earth-positive consciousness, amongst bankers and bullies, merchants and meanies, illegal office cleaners, underpaid students, stressed-out young graduates, everyone : all of us together under the threat of Total Meltdown.

For, the Earth is changing, and changing fast, and everything has got to shape up and shift out. The institutions and assumptions of old will be blown away in the morning mist, and all, believe me, will become crystal clear.

It’s on Friday 27th March, from dawn to lunch. Bring a rucksack, walkable footwear and a great big smile. And the drinks will be on us.

It was a tale of intrigue, passion and suspicion, that ended with a slap in the face for journalism today.

The architects of Reclaim the Sheets were young. They were frisky. And they were disgruntled.

Shrouded in secrecy and suspense, their first meeting was in a dank, dusty railway arch bar at Waterloo train station.

They talked about Climate Change, conspiracy, creative writing and their personal choice in cocoa-based stimulants.

“Let’s publish a newspaper ! Let’s centre all the news on Energy and Climate Change ! Let’s call it The Daily Planet !”

“What we really need is a website, some viral marketing videos and some snazzy babes of various genders.”

And so the debate slurped on, into the night, as the rumble of the iron horses overhead vibrated their souls, and their skinny lattes shivered, palpably.

We think that the mainstream Media is not terribly good at reporting on Climate Change. It’s all in fits and starts, and there’s no timeline, and the science stories get frequently mangled because the reporters don’t understand the full implications of what is being said.

Climate Change is the defining crisis of our lives, and it should have pride of place in every print organ, newsblog and telly show. It impacts Economy, Environment, our ability to buy food to eat. It causes death, migration, upheaval.

Guys (and Gals), we have a crisis on our hands. Our only possible response ? Satire.

Watch out for our free newspaper this week in London, or download it for free at a slightly later future date.

Ouch ! I can feel the pain from the stinging reviews, even from this safe distance !

The film “The Age of Stupid” has free-minded, liberal, tolerant film reviewers and social commentators reaching for their ice picks.

Apparently, the film is a “hecture”, a hectoring lecture, according to The Observer :-

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/mar/21/the-age-of-stupid-review

And David Cox pulls out all his nauseating stops by damning it a “conceit” in The Guardian :-

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2009/mar/23/the-age-of-stupid

BBC sofa’d lefties and bitter old revolutionaries call it everything except wise :-

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/review/7959712.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/review/7959709.stm

Even the popular Science magazine New Scientist dims it with faint praise “worthy, though not riveting” :-

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20126990.900-film-review-the-age-of-stupid.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref=climate-change

And the commentary from Down Under just resorts to calling it “stupid” :-

http://blogs.news.com.au/heraldsun/andrewbolt/index.php/heraldsun/comments/age_of_stupid_fears

The point these brown-cordoroyed fellows (and some lasses) gloss over is that the documentary “The Age of Stupid” features people who are highly conflicted, in an effort to show the viewer that we are all living with compromise.

Yes, the narration and the graphics seem like a lecture in the classroom, but the filmed interviews themselves show that the reality for many people, even if they’re aware of the science, is unresolved.

It is not propaganda or dogma interwoven with human interest. It’s not preaching to the converted. And it’s not shouting down your opponent.

The Age of Stupid is much more intelligent than the analysis so far.

You should see the film and judge for yourself : are you informed, enlightened or preached at ?

After decades of denial, the truth can seem like a Southern Baptist Missionary drive, but the last thing we want to do is ram it down your throat.

“The Russian Revolution was accompanied by a remarkable period of artistic experiment known as Constructivism, which questioned the fundamental properties of art and asked what its place should be in a new society. The Constructivists…looked at how they could contribute to everyday life through design…”

So murmurs the small booklet handed out at Tate Modern to accompany the “Rodchenko & Popova” exposition galleria “Defining Constructivism”.

And it’s Big Art all over again in 2009 as we witness the construction of yet more Climate Camp settlements : the art of constructing the future right in your neighbourhood, down amongst the fading idiocy of what passes for modern “built environment”.

Prince Charles should be pleased with us : we’re taking architecture on, head on, and camping our way to a sustainable mode of community infrastructure.

Some 40% to 50% of all building Energy goes into heating, so we’re showing that we can “put more garb on, use less Carbon” as one of my dearest relations puts it.

“Insulation, insulation, insulation” is the way forward.

Some 10% to 15% of all building Energy goes into lighting, so we’re using sunlight and light emitting diodes (LEDs) to claw back on illumination emissions.

What ? Something that’s even more energy-efficient that energy efficient lightbulbs (compact fluorescents CFLs) ? Oh yes.

Some 25% to 30% of all personal Carbon Emissions are produced by transport, so we are demonstrating the Low Carbon alternatives to the Holy Car.

I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride it where I like.

http://www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20

Of course it’s art, writ large and real on the tarmacadam of the City of London.

Yes, you may feel liberated by living the Low Carbon future for a day/week/hour or so. Others may view you as revolutionary and may want to bang you up in a facility for the detention of persons.

Some people may not come to the G20 Climate Camp because they cannot bear the tension of the threat of incarceration. That’s OK. Climate Camp at home, then !

But think about it ! Whether you Climate Camp in central London, or on your own mud yard : you can be a Constructivist ! You can construct the future, here and now ! You can show everyone how the future will be realised, how it will come into real being.

When the Climate Refugees start arriving in large numbers, we will need to know how to build and maintain Very Low Carbon settlements. Come and learn how at the G20 Climate Camp !

When the state-sponsored property development programme completely runs out of steam, we will need to know how to house people in a low impact way. Come and learn how at the G20 Climate Camp !

When the water companies come under stress in the London region because of a shortage of rainfall, we will need to know how to build public conveniences that don’t use running water to flush. Come and learn how at the G20 Climate Camp !

When there are no more new films being made, no more new TV series being produced, and no more magazines will ever be printed again, we will need to know how to make our own art, design and entertainment. Come and learn how at the G20 Climate Camp !

Construct the future today (well, April 1st) !

camping exploits :-

You’d be forgiven for thinking that London has become the eco-celebrity film-making green-carpet capital of the world.

Gushing lesser and former names have been falling all over themselves to promote “The Age of Stupid”. Gillian Anderson (ex of X) was beside herself at the premiere and hasn’t stopped drawling since.

Doors have opened. Doors to Government Ministers, green pretender corporates, la-la fashion design houses. Anyone who’s green is ganging for Franny Armstrong. It’s like she’s made it to the Moon and made a new giant leap for cinematic (wo)mankind.

I mean, anyone who can get Vivienne Westwood riding a bicycle (whilst wearing a trademark strange frock) must be stellar fame material.

Can she handle it ? The tender, gentle daughter of an eco-dynasty, shy and unforthcoming at the best of times, suddenly thrust into the rough-cut Media circus ?

Will she survive ? But more importantly, will her message survive ?

The Age of Stupid manages to inform without preaching (mostly), and drag your ideological pet theories kicking and screaming over the threshold to sanity.

But can the film lead you to life-affirming action ? Can it guide you to “voluntary lifestyle change”, and the important matter of organisational change wherever you find yourself : work, rest and play ?

And can the social movement suggested in the film (and promoted by the film’s wide-ranging support base) amount to anything ?

When the sitting Government is still stupid enough to consider signing through a new unabated coal-fired power station, I’m not sure that a social movement of any kind will make any dent at all.

Will this film generate hot air and moonshine ? Or will it deliver an imperative ?
